Christine Kim ESS 102 Writing Project Section AI Farming at Mars Synopsys: In the year 2020, humanity finally sends its first manned mission to Mars for the purpose of cultivating farmland. The mission was named Demeter, after the Greek goddess of harvest, and this is the mission log of the astronaut that led the team. Day 1: Today is the launch date for our mission to Mars. Thirty two astronauts and five chimpanzees have been assigned to Demeter, and using the high speed transfer orbit, the trip to Mars is going to take 8.4 months [1]. The mission rocket will be guided by Earth’s gravity. Through gravitational assist, the rocket will circle onto Hohmann Transfer Orbit, and land on Mars 253 days later if everything goes smoothly. Hohmann Transfer is â€Å"orbital maneuver that transfers a satellite or spacecraft from one circular orbit to another†. This is the most fuel efficient way to move a spacecraft, and since this mission requires a giant spacecraft to move the astronauts, food, and other resources, we wanted to minimize the space that fuel would take up. â€Å"Hohmann Transfer is half of an elliptical orbit† with one end at launch site (Earth in our case), and other end at the destination (Mars).
